Maxie's Southern Comfort

Having traveled in the South, we were eager to try the food and hospitality at Maxie's. Unfortunately, we did not experience the quality of food we expected. Their drink and appetizer menu offered many options. We selected oyster shooters, beer, and a pate with bread and vegetables. The oyster was good but the drink mix tasted like a standard mix. The pate was nothing more than a cheese spread. Complimentary corn bread was also served and was good. The atmosphere of the upper dining room was nice but basically undefined.

Entres we selected were a crab cake platter and a flounder platter. The crab cakes were mushy, fishy and bland. Rice Ramolee was with the crabcakes. It was nicely done with a tomato based sauce. If you like plain white rice, you would like it. The sweet potato fries were good, but a little too greasy. The cole slaw with bleu cheese sounded great, but the bleu cheese gave the slaw an offensive taste. The flounder was watery and lacked flavor. A small salad and buttered russet potatoes came with the flounder. The salad and the potatoes were average. After the entres, we decided not to try a dessert.

Overall, the experience at Maxie's was a disappointment. Perhaps other menu selections might have made things different for us on this day. Or, maybe they're trying to offer too much variety. (East Coast, South Central and the Gulf Coast) Working with a narrower region of food influences might make it easier to do them well.
